(It was my DH who was checking in.) In this particular case there was also a line to check in. But, first and foremost--It is a public space- other people can hear you. The FD asking a person to verbally provide this information every time at check in (or multiple times during the same check in) is not very discrete and in my opinion not a good system for maintaining guest privacy.
