Over the past year and a half, I've flown on 4 planes that were listed as Reported without NEXT or NEXT was unconfirmed, yet they all had NEXT. (I emailed the fleet site to report my findings). Second, the plane has viasat, which is mostly on NEXT planes.
Back to your logic, why would they upgrade any 737-800s wifi if Starlink is just around the corner. For that matter, why would they update ANY plane's wifi with Starlink just around the corner. (Unless UA is looking to get rid of the US Ka band as quickly as possible).
My assumption is they still have a contractual obligation with ViaSat, hence why there's still getting planes coming out with ViaSat even though the first mainline plane is about to go into service with starlink. It'll sure be another fun game of guessing which kinda wifi you'll get though.
