CAD taxes factored in to cost
Canada seems to be the only country in the world that charges taxes for points purchases.
I really want to book IHG points with this current 100% bonus (for a specific redemption).
I've tried various methods of payment to get around the HST/PST that erodes 13% of the value.
I've lived outside Canada since 2019.
We've maintained all Canadian banking including credit cards (work postings of short duration).
Any ideas / suggestions?
I tried apple and google pay but they come back to forcing a billing address.
Wise card purchase bounced back twice after funds were withdrawn (reimbursed).
Amex doesn't seem to sell US prepaid cards anymore.
I don't have enough topcashback funds for the whole $2k purchase.
I don't want to keep messing around with my IHG mailing address for fear of getting locked.
Ignoring the above:
I need some help valuing the points versus cash booking options - considering lost value of points otherwise earned on a cash booking.
Buying IHG points with a Canadian credit card with taxes paid (no foreign exchange) costs:
200,000 + 200,000 bonus IHG points = $2,260 USD
That is 0.00565 of a cent per point (versus half of a cent)
It will essentially cost me $56 for every 100k night reservation.
Not so bad. Right?
Points is still less expensive than cash.
But, ...
How do I account for the lost points if I booked with cash outright (disregarding any promotions since I have very very poor timing)?
