One of her arguments was that using the app to scan the mobile BP at the kiosk would load the reservation faster than keying the MP# on the old kiosk -- we didn't actually test this with a stopwatch but I'm not sure this holds up in the real world: Pull phone out of pocket, unlock, scroll to and launch United app, hit the boarding pass button, hope the BP displays, fiddle with it under the barcode reader until it actually scans, then put it back in pocket and jump through the hoops to print a paper BP versus (tap) (8 taps for the MP number) (tap) to get to the same point on the old kiosk UX.
Among the stupidest things the new kiosks do is -- unlike the old kiosks where you could simply enter a PNR or your MP# -- they default to only accepting the PNR and require an additional tap to enter the MP#. Beyond that getting a paper boarding pass isn't meaningfully more cumbersome... I wasn't checking a bag but it appears the intention is that the bag tag comes out of the front of the kiosk as well (/sigh)
One thing I found questionable is that she mentioned she's never seen a passenger who had their mileage plus # memorized -- so I ask FT... is it that uncommon?
Absent the lag in the controllers, I can type my pmCO mileage plus number from memory much faster than I can unlock phone, open app, etc. Not even close.
Who actually knows their PNR? That's why I know my MP number.
UI/UX is a dead art and I am convinced that the people who design airports/associated services don't actually use them on a regular, let alone, road warrior basis.
