amex def should not be surprised. but LLL has zero experience.
this is why i spammed this thread about this topic. while saks credit is still around without massive clawbacks, im not sure amex is OK w/ constant GC buying. def not the intended behavior.
This should be the expected behavior, even for people who are buying stuff. I'll ALWAYS buy a GC first, then immediately redeem it for merchandise. Why? Because if I need to return the item for whatever reason, I end up with the credit back on a GC, as opposed to a credit clawback. This is especially important for quarterly credits where you could return the item after one quarter has ended in which case, you can't get the credit back. So ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS buy a GC first, then turn around and immediately use the GC to buy an item if you wish to do so.

So? Who cares. Doesn't matter if they like seeing you or not. It's their job to sell you stuff and if all you want is a GC, that's what they have to sell you. When I went to LLL at Westfield Valley Fair, 2/3 of the people in line were buying GCs. Sales rep saw that I had no merchandise like 2/3 of the people in line and said "$75 gift card?".
