basically you did what the people who are constantly trying to angleshoot the program do to get nights/points credited to their account even though the room is used by someone else.
I just used the official Marriott process for gifting a points reservation in August; the reservation was made in my name with the gift recipient added as second guest. I didn't understand why, but this seems to be the official process.
The rez showed up under my reservations in app, and I received ENCs and welcome bonus points.
