WX verification works for most things, but there are some apps/services like AMAP (Gaode) that requires phone number registration, and they do not allow US numbers.
You need an account or something now right? Many years ago I got a China Unicom prepaid SIM that worked for me. But that was pre-COVID and after COVID it got canceled. I remember using that SIM for SMS verification. But now it seems registration is much harder.
I only have an M Business Visa, is that enough? Or I thought you needed some address and that's always been a problem.
3HK esim for 50HKD purchased online receives messages fine, you just need to register it online with your passport, but in China it's no different to any other foregin sim card. I have one of those.
There has never been any need for visas or addresses for the SIM. You, in most cases need those for the bank account, but not always.
