AUS: Horrible ground ops experience
I flew into AUS today and we landed about 20 min early (yeah!) but then realized that we had no gate (boo) but hey I get it. I think Southwest has like 10 gates at AUS. I did see all but one was occupied and assumed that maybe someone else was rolling in for the empty gate. Pilot gets on and says we are waiting on gate 14 and he expects it to be 45 min. Wow! He also says he will try and take another gate if it becomes available. Typical speech. Ok so 15 min goes by and 3 other gates open up. 4 gates empty now. No movement. 15 min more and 3 more open up (7 empty now) and no movement. An hour goes by and gate 14 is the ONLY GATE OCCUPIED (this is 830pm) and pilot comes on and says operations told him thats the ONLY gate we can have. Well I can see they are loading luggage and catering so I know it will be a bit. I have NEVER, in my 4m miles on 3 airlines, seen such a thing. We wait nearly 90 min for the ONLY occupied gate to free up. Then as we move towards the gate there is no ground crew. Another few min. Get pulled up, no door person. Another 5 min. FINALLY arrive 90 min late and we landed 20 min early!! Pilot gets on and says he is embarrassed and that we should all write WN to complain. Really! I was in row two and got off the plane with the pilot and he said he had never seen anything like it. He was like "it seemed like they were punishing us!". Yeah thats right. And THIS is why I don't fly WN even though they have direct flights to most places I go. Crazy town.
