Trip like I did?
Here’s a few “lessons learned”, although there’s already been a bunch on this forum. I didn’t do too badly, one miscalculation on ground travel time versus layover time. I made 14 of my 15 destinations. My next set, in a week, will have 7 destinations, so I should hit 21. I am not sure if I’ll go for the remaining 4, the rest of the year is a bit odd, schedule-wise, for me.
· Layovers should be at least 90 minutes, and probably at least 2 hours. There’s a YouTube travel lady, the Portable Professional, and she said much the same thing backed up with math. I spent some boring time in airports, but made all my flights, and most layovers were at least 90 minutes. There are a few places where I understand it’s an easy turnaround; I think I have one coming up. But usually you want the breathing room.
· If you need to take Uber or Lyft, check both at each location. In some cities Uber is cheaper, sometimes Lyft is.
· I used public transport a bunch, and used the hotel shuttle whenever I could. Sometimes I booked a hotel because it had a shuttle, and reviews claimed it worked well. E.G., the last hotel I was at had a 24/7 shuttle.
· Pack light as you can. I had a 35-litre Osprey backpack that weighed, full, 11-12 pounds, and a ScotteVest with a lot of pockets to take up some slack. This suited me well. I could have probably washed some things at a hotel if necessary.
· Merino wool is your friend. I had a number of different articles of clothing of merino wool, and they held up with out absorbing body odor. They do cost a bit more.
· On JetBlue, if its more than a few weeks away, check for fare changes every few days. I think I got back a few hundred dollars by checking, cancelling and rebooking at the lower fare.
One thing I didn’t do but could have, at least once, was see about staying at the airport overnight. I took an Uber to a hotel and back, when I could have just toughed it out at the airport and saved like $200. My goal was to do this as cheaply as I could, but missed this opportunity. There is a website suggested here, sleepinginairports.net, that gives hints to places to do this.
My total outlay this go-round for 15 flights (unfortunately only 14 unique destinations) on JetBlue was:
Flights: $1736 + ~$200 extra for a screw-up = ~$1936
Hotels: 6 stays, total ~$600, plus a final one on points
I did have fun on this set, and got to see a few places I’d never been, for a few hours anyway. And I got over 6000 JB miles, and at least 10 tiles so far (should end up being more in a few days). Not sure what to take as a perk, the group B boarding, or the 5000 bonus miles (worth like $65-75 or so?).
