I've largely given up on currency exchange because ATMs are so easy to use. You can't go anywhere in London without running into one. Just make sure you use the ones operated by banks - and not the small privately-operated ones usually found inside shops etc, which tend to add their own extra charges on. "Proper" bank ATMs are usually free to use - you'd only need to pay what your own bank charges you.
