Thanks for the quick reply. Assuming I really do want to fly on the flight I originally purchased (not some other date/time) and in the EXIT row that I also purchased for cash ... the scary thing is that if I cancel my flight, then rebook it, there is a small chance that either the price might change or the EXIT row seats might be gone. Also, for three people in both directions the exit row upgrade was $104 per leg -- so I would like to immediately apply the $657 (with taxes) that I have already given to United on the re-booked flight. Are you saying that is not possible -- that I have to give them another $657 and then wait for the original $657 to come back as a credit card credit?

It would be nice if you could just go in and rebook to the same flight, keeping the seat assignment as well and just get some number of points redeposited into your account. Southwest used to have that feature, although with all their changes, that has gone away too, as far as I can tell. All those changes plus inferior flight times are why this trip is booked on United -- so just trying to understand all the processes that are in place.

From what you have said, if for some reason I can't go on this flight (would be like a family medical emergency), then if I cancel, will I get my $657 back as credit card credit (real cash back) or will be be travel funds with a one year expiration from original purchase?
