There is a lot of wrong assumptions, sorry. BA has not got your money, credit card companies will release it to BA after your flight done, depends on whatever commercial agreement BA has but airlines are high risk businesses from the CC companies point of view. BA still flies most planes pretty full and commercially successful with the current pricing model so there is no need for BA to change, etc. They won't wave the fare difference, only in emergency situations and they will need proof. Maybe your brother has a better and cheaper option to change his tickets usually airlines in America has better change polices. So right now you either accept this change fee or just accept your current flight date. If BA or any other airline in the ittenary cancel or changes significantly (so like 4 or more hours) then you will able to change your current ittenary for free. Also in regards of change fee and price difference point of view time is not your friend the cost most likely just increasing as you are getting closer to the departure dates.
