Maybe I missed it, but what is the new system? More like the Hawaiian upgrade wait-list system?

I'm flying to Japan on Hawaiian early next month with a companion and am hoping the guest upgrades on HA and AS combine so both of us can be upgraded since the two I got from marching to HA is only enough for one upgrade.
