Man, you probably have to calculate out based off recent flights, who you’re flying more, and what you value. I have been both AS MVP Gold (3 years) and AA (Exec Platinum). Based in Chicago, flying lots of midwestern short flights and longer trips to the west coast + international, roughly 60 flights this year and about 40 per year the last few.
You didn’t mention this as a priority so not sure how much it matters - but I feel very confident saying Alaska service, recognition, and in flight experience is significantly better than AA - and that’s even considering Gold vs EP, let alone platinum or titanium. I have been thanked for being gold on literally every single AS flight and get the same thanks on AA maybe 25% of the time, ironically never when in F. Not to mention all of AS drinks/snacks/food are way better (cheese plate & old fashioned, anyone?!).
From a miles perspective, I like both programs, but they seem to have their own pros and cons. I will say Alaska is fantastic with saver availability on partners, but they’re consistently a rip off on their own flights especially in F. AA is as good on partners (in some cases better) but is often good on their own flights too (see domestic F for ex). You’d have to think about what your mileage redemption aspirations are. I also, shockingly, have more trust in AA to keep a good program than the recent slew of AS changes (though given the citi partnership maybe I shouldn’t). Alaska’s ability to earn EQM on miles tickets is a game changer though - if you did Europe just once a year on miles, you’re roughly 15% to status if you’re distance based.
Especially with the changes I see AA as easier to earn. More opportunities for loyalty points in case of emergency needed earn, more credit card boosts, and overall less confusing. I’m still shocked AS doesn’t do a status point bonus for revenue tickets like AA does (EP is 11 LP/dollar vs just 5 for everyone on AS).
With all this said, I love Alaska and would way rather support them. AA seems to be evolving slightly but even still, it’s tough - and upgrades in my experience are way harder to come by. If AS didn’t cancel the ORD-SFO trip I’d continue earning status with them, but the fact that my 4x/year west coast trips are now on AA sort of sealed the deal for me…
I’d recommend Alaska and see how it treats you. Oh, their lounges are way better too
