Refund requests on medical grounds (ICU admission) – chances of success?

We had two separate bookings for a family trip to the US, both departing from the same airport. We were due to fly out today. One reservation was my partner’s mother and another family member; the second was myself and my partner.

My partner’s mum has been in ICU for over a week so we couldn't go ahead with the trip.

After speaking to AA customer services, I cancelled both bookings and submitted a refund request for each ticket number via the online form, attaching the hospital letter. In the request for the second booking I explained that we were all going to be travelling together and included the first record locator.

How likely is it that the refund requests will be approved on medical grounds?
