I know sometimes they text about doing it but I haven’t received one this time, but they seem to ask at the gate sometimes even without that text message.
This would be at Gatwick if that works differently to Heathrow. If it is possible do I have to go to a manned counter or can I use the self service to do it?
Yes you can....even on an HBO fare. Just go to any check-in desk and they will take it from you and check it into the hold free-of-charge. The only stipulation is it must meet the hand-baggage size and weight regulations. I've done it for years as my travel is rarely time sensitive on either leg and I CBA to carry a wheely bag around an airport or fight for overhead locker space
