You could never SDC to an itinerary that has a connection of more than 4 hours, for domestic tickets. However if you're looking to spend more time at a hub airport like SLC, do the following. Have an itinerary booked for the latest flights possible connecting thru the desired hub city. Then show up earlier in the day at the departure airport, preferably two hours prior to the departure time of the flight you want to take. Go through security. Then wait at the gate at least an hour before departure and ask the gate agent to be put on the standby list. Having medallion status usually helps a lot. Then hopefully you clear and get on the earlier flight and then you're on your way. Standby is done at each airport. So at the connection airport, you can decide to standby for another earlier flight or just keep your original connecting flight and boarding pass.
