So I will add "when upgrading tiers via retro-crediting miles, the date of the beginning of the higher tier is the day, on which the retro-crediting occurs, however these miles are still (only) valid for 365 from the actual date they were flown" and also "if you've been silver for a while, then the silver anniversary and the deadline to reach gold will very likely be two different dates, based on the 365-day-rule mentioned above" and I will leave it there, because we really have zero clues as to what your friend has done, how long she's been silver etc., how long she's been a M&B member etc. For upgrading purposes it's always a "rolling" year (while for retaining a tier it's a fixed year, based on the date you reached it), so that "May" deadline for her gold upgrade will possibly become a "June" deadline, or whatever else, according to when she's actually taken her flights in the previous year.
