Miles redemption : what does "bactracking" involve ?

HELP !!
I read in article 5 (general rules DC) that "backtracking is not permitted bla bla bla. "

What does it mean ? Say I want to fly Paris (zone 1) to Maldives (zone 5). the only route ( I called them) is via Singapore on the days of travel. Does this mean I have to pay Zone 1 to Zone 5 , OR, because if "backtracking", do i have to pay Zone 1 (Paris) to Zone 7 ( SIN) + Zone 7 (SIN) to Maldives ( Zone 5 ) ????

A friend of mine called and a person at diamond club just told him to pay for "2" tickets becaus ehe was flying through another zone. He didn't seem to know but as he happened to be the supervisor, my colleague trusted him, even though this seems weird. So he cancelled my friend's booking.

What do you guys think ?? Is that the rule ? for me, it says the contrary in the BMI book. My colleague read the rule to the supervisor (his name is "JAMIE") quoting "backtracking is not permitted..... unless route restrictions prevent this". But the supervisor said "that's right, and then you have to add miles". So my colleague said "but it diosn't say you have to add miles" Jamie : " "yes but it doesnt say the contrary either"... etc.

What do specialists like you think about all this ?

Thanks !
