When I did Osechi delivery, it was a semi special occasion for my folks. Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya have a bounty of choices from menus created by various ryotei itamae (chefs) in Tokyo and Kyoto. There are also Osechi menus made by chefs from Western restaurants (French, Italian, etc.) in Japan.

Osechi from Mitsukoshi or Takashimaya will be fancy Osechi, fitting for once a year event. Also, there are various osechi based on different cuisines to fit the palate of various people.
I haven’t had Osechi foods in Japan for over 16 years and this will be my daughter’s first New Year in the country, neither my husband nor father-in-law are terribly keen on the foods (you might remember this old thread which sums up the general feeling - Ordering New year Osechi online ) so I’m burdened by the weight of responsibility on deciding a selection that will leave LapGirl, somehow, with a positive impression. My hope is that there has been some kind of quiet evolution in the past 10 years elevating the morsels so they can be more enjoyable than endurable.

Even if you don’t have a favourite, which ones did you have that you could say were a hit rather than a miss?
