This seems to align with AC's previous moves to funnel traffic from the prairies into YVR or YYZ as opposed to YEG/YYC (YQR and YXE being the most obvious examples). Wonder if Westjet will jump in and compete on the new route.
I guess I should be glad YYC didn't take a hit here. I feel like all non hub routes out of YYC could be on the chopping block. Right now:
- YEG is down to 3 or 4 flights a day.
- YWG is down to 1.
- YQU is down to 1 (and this is the only AC service to YQU)
- YLW is down to 1.
- YOW is down to 1.
- EWR has long been 1 daily, but UA could easily take over that route (like they have for all other *A transborder out of YYC (ORD, IAD, IAH, DEN, SFO)).
- LHR remains 1 daily, but I can see it being dropped. Westjet has a huge network out of Calgary for connections, but without the same for AC, I wonder if its sustainable, and if AC's fleet fits the bill (AC's A330 has double the J seats of Westjet's 787).
I’d be surprised if YYC-LHR is dropped (though you never know). I’d think YVR would go double daily in the summer if AC dropped YYC.
