Can confirm, this may be an issue if the people checking IDs care enough. Make sure you always fill out your middle name if your passport has one. Nobody gave me problems in Beijing for this but in a sleepier airport (Lanzhou) they pulled me aside and made it a "problem" that took a supervisor to rectify by reissuing the ticket with my middle name.
