Paging Vanillabean - the "hit" to my credit overall was 10 points - my Credit Score letter was 850, online down to 840 (plus $28K added to available credit lines) plus now a few more points due to all the recent but unpaid spend. No datapoints on closing an old card yet, as the one I will likely close had a recent renewal, so it will be the better part of a year to see if that has any effect.
