I use it pretty regularly, but only been sent a message once or twice in last year. Both times texts came through. Not sure if it's a phone setting or something else, not really an IT person here.
I've had texts come through while only connected to wifi before authenticating. But like you, only had a few out of many flights where it wanted to do that. Perhaps it is random to deter the sharing mentioned above.
Have they disabled the hack to be able to utilize the free service on the laptop? Doesn’t seem to working anymore.
Airplane mode, connect to wifi, turn on hotspot. Very simple.
