The T&Cs are meaningless here; no Amex benefit has
ever officially supported gift cards (except maybe some clipped coupons that are specifically for them). It's just a question of what slips through coded as "real merchandise". If you read the T&Cs, gift cards don't even count for minimum spend SUBs.
I agree with others that it seems very likely physical GC will work and digital ones will not.
