The flight arrives into JFK at 4:50 PM. I'm making assumptions with all the caveats. I doubt there is a 17 hour layover that arrives at 5p and leaves at noon the following day and displays as a multicity trip that counts as a connection. I also just priced out some flights and with a sample of 3, spending the overnight dramatically raises fares and prices out as a multicity.
17 hr layover for a flight that arrives JFK at 4:50pm would be a 9:50am departure the following morning. Mater of fact the 17 yr hour layover priced out less than if I continued onward to my final US domestic destination. I did build and book the trip as a multi-city flying into Glasgow via JFK & AMS and out of Edinburgh, but I did not break up the EDI-JFK-XXX segment. The outbound fare basis code is TLW06TM4 and inbound is VLW26SM4.

I'm going to stay next "door" at the TWA Hotel as I have been told that the ride-share pick up is a mess now at JFK with the T4 construction. I can hook the Club Golf bag onto the hook of my Tumi suitcase. I will follow up pending the outcome in EDI when I check-in how my baggage was tagged.

As mentioned above after departing CBP, half the time the baggage tag is looked at to make sure there is at least an hour for the domestic connection. I'm not worried about the clubs as I travel to Titleist TPI (Oceanside, CA) next month for wood and Vokey wedge fitting, my Circle T Tour Rat putter is insured under my homeowners policy, and all of my Vokey wedges/Mizuno irons are stamped into the metal of the club with my initials. If the potential JFK theft wants to hit Project X LZ 6.5 125 gram iron shafts, have fun.
