You are right, it's not fool-proof. I've had several flights where the home page (from AAinflight) would not open until airborne, and one where the WiFi network was not even broadcasting. I know you can get some internet options (like AA pages) without buying anything, and I was hoping the SMS authorization code might also get through. I did have one time where after closing everything down after a code never came, I re-opened and tried again, and it worked without a code. YMMV on this for sure!
