Turkey has their SHY regulations which are similar to EC261/2004 EU regulations. If the airline caused your delay and misconnect they owe you duty of care (which they already provided through a hotel and breakfast) but possibly 400 or 600 euros if the delay was their fault. I just had a SHY claim against AJet be successful using SHY regulations.
If the flight was diverted to JFK because they couldn't land in EWR due to weather then no SHY claim to be made.

It was diverted due to thunderstorms. I was impressed that they provided a hotel and transportation given that the delay was due to weather. There was however, no communication from anyone that this was an option. I was going to book a hotel myself but then for some reason decided to check with them first. When I landed I proceeded to customer care and they were the ones who told me to exit via passport control, go to the hotel desk and they would provide me with a room. I’m glad I did!
