The flight arrives into JFK at 4:50 PM. I'm making assumptions with all the caveats. I doubt there is a 17 hour layover that arrives at 5p and leaves at noon the following day and displays as a multicity trip that counts as a connection. I also just priced out some flights and with a sample of 3, spending the overnight dramatically raises fares and prices out as a multicity.
As OP mentioned it is not displaying as Multi-City. Some of the Carribbean-ATL-XXX itineraries will involve an overnight connection in the 12-17 hour range, so it certainly is allowed on the system. Making a blanket statement that this won't count as a connecting itinerary is not correct. Instead, should be focusing on the specific luggage policy at JFK.
