Moderator, please move this to the proper thread on Special meals:
Experience of Special Meal
My wife and I flew UA 1175 9/15 on SFO-HNL. I was advised by my doctor to avoid dairy food due to a medical condition. So I ordered the special Vegetarian Non-Dairy meal.
When the special meal breakfast was served, I was surprised that there is a Croissant and a dish of Yogurt on the tray. Croissant is made from butter. The only thing special was the small cup of spray that labeled vegan, but that does not make the Croissant non-dairy! I thought the Yogurt may be some kind of non-dairy yogert, but after a few spoonfuls I was certain it was made from milk. Then the only food remaining that could be non-dairy was the hot dish that contains milk-like fluid and cooked grains. I thought the Croissant and Yogurt may be put on the tray by mistake because they are common items in all breakfast choices. So the only possibility for a non-dairy food is the hot dish in which some non-animal milk, such as coconut milk was used. Being very hungrey in the morning I went ahead to eat it. Halfway through the dish my suspecion that the milk was real milk increased so I stopped. When my wife tasted the remaining food in the dish, she (an agriculture major) said of course both the Yogurt and the hot dish were made from real milk!
We arrived Honolulu around noon and my waterly diarrhea started an hour later. I fell sick all afternoon and evening, going to toilet multiple times, and stayed in bed in between. I think this is a rediculous and unthinkable error for UA. people with strong dairy allergies could be sent to hospital. Not only that the main dish should not contain milk, the buttery Croissan the Yogurt should absolutely not be put in any non-dairy meal!
