Would I be able to drop off the golf club bag upon exiting CBP in JFK at the Delta baggage drop off and take the suitcase with me (have a reception in the New York area that evening), as I would then drop off the suitcase the following morning when I return for the US connecting segment (JFK-XXX). Ticket is not displaying as a multi-city, and I will be leaving the airport and staying at a hotel that evening. Just don't want to lug around a golf club travel bag if I don't have to.
No, you don't have a "connection", and your bags will not be labeled all the way through. Unfortunately you'll have to lug the golf clubs around.
