GOL partners with American. I flew AA to GIG and connected with GOL and they did take care of baggage. I think there was a shuffle a few years back between LATAM and GOL and the US airlines they partnered with.
I do not know about the baggage transfer though. Someone else will likely be along with that reply. I was not impressed with GOL, but my bags arrived, so I guess I can't complain either!
