It wasn’t domestic it was Dublin and 30 years ago in my 1p Ryanair flights at Gatwick South they had a barrier and a gate and someone collected your Ryanair boarding pass and you went down the gated lane avoiding immigration to baggage reclaim and then you had customs and arrivals. Nothing to stop you swapping your boarding pass with an international passenger, them using it to avoid immigration and you using your passport to land yourself. Not a big issue as someone would have needed to have document checks to board a UK bound flight anyway.
