Honestly, like others have said - it's a hard no.. and these days, flying is like dealing with a thousand little emperors - from sidewalk to sidewalk, you have to deal with every little authoritarian guarding their little kingdom - they have to do something to make their job tolerable (i don't mean FAs - you guys are great)... BUT... a little sugar with the flight crew 'can' go a long way... give it a try... what's the worst that can happen? (but don't argue - or you'll likely be met at the arrivals gate by the police... lol )
Being pleasant during exchanges with the crew is a given, but in this case having two passengers over 2 in one seat is expressly against carrier policies and also just plain unsafe so as you said it's a hard no, so why even "give it a try" in the first place? Maybe I am misunderstanding the second half of that last paragraph.
