Sounds to me like he is trying to get the LAX-NRT-HKG route, and all it is giving him is LAX-SFO-HKG route. Similar to what I brought up in the other post. The route he wants is one that would have come up on united.com before these recent "improvements", and a route I have flown several times, so it is legal.
