Now, my plans to travel light has changed to one check in luggage. And I will only have 2 hours at JFK to connect to my domestic flight.

Question is - is it possible to request Gulf Air to check my luggage through on AA as they do have a code share. I will collect baggage at customs and then recheck at JFK. I just do not wish to lose my window to check in baggage if I am delayed at immigration.

Any thoughts?
You can request through check with Gulf Air but expect to be disappointed. But the through check won't help you much. Whether it was through checked or not, you would still need to collect your bags and present yourself and baggage at the border at JFK where you and your belongings will queue up and clear both immigration and customs are handled together.

Once you have cleared the US border you should then have the option to recheck bags, in your case if you can show your onward AA ticket then the recheck agents will may tag you bag for you and put it into the baggage system for you.

What I would be more concerned with is the fact that you have just 2 hours between flights. And as of October GF will be in Terminal One and AA are in Terminal Eight. And with separate tickets you have no protection with AA to rebook you if your inbound flight is delayed, your bag delivery is delayed or the queue for the border delaying you. Two hours for a self-connect involving the need to clear the US border is IMO very likely to be a problem.
