The odds of a Gold getting upgraded are slim and none unless you are flying a light load. Do not split and use if for free bags for the group and better economy seats at less than T24. You play games at the gate with the agent if you think you have a chance for an uprade
also, if you DO split a round trip on the departure leg, you lose the free bag allowance for the return for all those who were split off.
Good reason to always price 2 one-ways and if same price as 1 round trip, book 2 one-ways so you can split each way as opportunities arise, while protecting bag benefits for everyone in the PNR together.
