Well, in situations before with airlines and other companies, there are plenty of times compensation is offered even without legal basis. In my own business, at times I have paid a compensation to a customer in spite of no legal obligation to do this. The goodwill and spinoff revenue generated in many of these cases has far outweighed the compensation.
As they say in Spanish, "El que no llora no mama" :-)
