UK.261 gives UA a duty of care, so they will provide a hotel. (They would provide one anyway for controllable delays). However, the hotel they provide might not be the sort of place one would wish to stay.
BA no longer flies to DTW, but DL does have a nonstop. It leaves much earlier in the day, however. There are so many EWR-LHR flights on UA: how disruptive would it be to take the previous departure?\\\\\\\\

the ba flight would have meant coming into jfk and connecting on AA out of LGA next day
so that didn’t make sense
Would have otherwise been fun to share the same flight
