Assume a hotel from United is out of the question if the flight is delayed?
UA’s self-service rebooking tools are excellent (the traveler should download the United app prior to the trip). On the other hand, finding an agent in-person inside the airport may be a challenge, although there are QR codes everywhere to use to connect to their video chat agents.
UK.261 gives UA a duty of care, so they will provide a hotel. (They would provide one anyway for controllable delays). However, the hotel they provide might not be the sort of place one would wish to stay.
BA no longer flies to DTW, but DL does have a nonstop. It leaves much earlier in the day, however. There are so many EWR-LHR flights on UA: how disruptive would it be to take the previous departure?
