Amtrak has recently changed their policy such that on-board upgrades shall cost the same as the lowest bucket of the applicable accommodation charge. In other words, it would cost you the same to book in advance. Call 800-USA-RAIL to see if that fare bucket is still available for your dates.
So knowing that accomodations on this route are often lower than what the website is currently asking, if I'm willing to risk that there will be accomodations available on the day of travel, I should wait and buy the upgrade on board? Or is it the lowest accomodation fare available at the time of departure?
