If you have a competent travel agent who historically has this covered, then I'd believe them.
Trawling thru my travel docs, it appears I have a single ticket number that covers the PHX-SFO (on AA) and SFO-HKG legs (on CX).

I suppose that answers my original question -- am I correct in assuming that a single ticket number will effectively guarantee AA will check-in my bags thru to HKG?

If that assumption is correct, then the error (and confusion) is mine -- I had thought both the return trips were ticketed separately (since I got separate booking confirmation emails from AA and from CX).
