It all started with Newark being in New York, then "BusinessFirst's Lay Flat" when its only (in comparison to the entire widebody fleet) a small portion of the fleet, as well as a snadwich equally a "meal at meal time" (not that I don't appreciate, but I remember real meals in coach).
Now 3 to 5 hour flights are "short-hops"
Get with the program of Big Brother might take care of you
