That seems to be their approach- zero out our ability to actually do anything meaningful with a partner airline, then sever the relationship thereafter.

Not sure where you are searching, SQ awards that do not touch north america range from possible to widely abundant. It is even on old AS chart which means a lot of interesting medium haul routes are possible like HKG-SIN, unlike the current chart designed by a person who never passed high school math.
Sadly LA also has a lot of possible sweet spots from east coast, but we clearly are seeing the quick decline of AS.
