big price differential for Lyft/Uber/Waymo

We had a staycation in SF this weekend. Family was excited about the prospect of taking our first ever Waymos, and we scored a 30% off promotion. Despite that, on a couple of occasions, Lyft was $10+ cheaper for rides within the city. So even with tipping, it was a fair bit cheaper. Uber was similarly priced to the Waymo.

I suspect Lyft is aggressively promoting lower prices to capture 'market share' as a loss leader: once I selected it, it would always try to upsell me for a 'faster pickup' or 'better car' -- which I declined, and in both cases the ride arrived very quickly and in a super car, so I suspect the upsell would have resulted in identical cars, but just at higher prices. On the flip side, Waymo is often the most expensive option (though it's usually a wash with Uber when one factors in tipping).

We did take Waymo a couple of times, and the best thing, by far, was being able to chat and laugh as a family in the car without feeling self-conscious, the music selection thing is also cool, except my kids kept fighting over it.

Bottom line is that currently in the city, worth checking all three apps for the best price.

PS really wish Waymo would come to the East Bay and able to go to/from SFO (by far my biggest use of rideshare).
