Correct me if I'm wrong, but take off and landings are based upon the current prevailing wind. The 28 runways are generally the normal prevailing wind as I understand it.
I do remember taking off in the early 2000s from runway one either left or right, on MD80 bound to amsterdam.
On an MD80 you would have had to refuel in Montreal at the latest flying to A'dam. That destination is about 2000 miles beyond the capacity of an MD80.
