I have several applications that require 2FA, so I need SMS access when traveling abroad. I would check the full HTML site for International Pass options, I noticed the myATT App only listed a $12/day pass option for me, not the $35 for 7 days pass. The full desktop HTML site listed the $35 option. Again post-paid might have only one $12/day option.

Getting MFA SMSs can be difficult when traveling outside the USA and without an international pass. If your Wi-Fi calling is activated in your phone, you should be able to send/receive SMSs and make phone calls in most cases when connected to Wi-Fi. However, there are cases where the hotel/coffee shop or whatever blocks ports and Wi-Fi Calling is not available, which is rare nowadays.

To avoid accidental data flowing and big data charges, I set my phone in Airplane mode and switch my AT&T eSIM to ROAMING OFF before I land. Never touched that

Once connected to a Wi-Fi hotspot, swipe down from the top, and you should see “AT&T Wi-Fi.” This means you’re connected and should be able to receive standard SMSs.

There might be a configuration where you can add a data-only eSIM (like GigSky) and keep the data flowing and not touch AT&T. This won’t fix your FMA issue, as the AT&T line needs to hit the AT&T server. Yes, sending green messages on iPhone is tough when outside the USA. Don’t let your friends use Android, LOL!

The last option is to have a local hotspot, which will allow you to connect to AT&T Wi-Fi and get FMA SMSs.

Can these big companies get together and make ONE authenticator please?!?!? Apple, Microsoft or Googler, come up with a joint solution and give us a SMS option!
Thanks for the detailed response. I think your suggestion of airplane mode while connected to wifi should solve my problem of being charged $12 a day. Will try and report back.
