I have a slightly different problem. We bought plane tickets to get to a cruise from Holland America on ANA (from NYC to Singapore, and return from Hong Kong to NYC). Holland America gave ANA our names with just a middle initial. Our passports have our full middle names. For example, the e-tickets have "JOHNM SMITH" rather than "JOHN MARK SMITH" in the passport. We called ANA and they said it could be changed if Holland America contacts their Sales Support Desk Team, but Holland America refuses and says the only way to change it is to cancel the tickets and issue new ones which will cost us over $10K dollars (this is 4 people in business class).
Does anyone think we will have a problem with the middle initial instead of the middle name? I think it would be fine in the US, but this will be our first trip to Asia and don't know how strict they will be.
No problem departing the US or transiting Japan.
On the return, as you are flying out of Hong Kong, there is potential for an issue. If you are made to check in at an automatic kiosk, it may not accept an incomplete match. But since you are in business class you will probably go straight to an actual human to check in and they will override any problem. This assumes you have a western name rather than a Chinese / Asian name.
