Subvariants of a type are extremely unreliable as it it super easy to swap them as needed. I had two or three flights on A318 booked and always ended on something larger.

Types themselves are less likely to change as that would also involve reassigning crews, which is a headache especially if a night stop is involved for them, but they do happen too.
