Did his routing through the US change? Did a connecting flight get cancelled creating a long layover?

LAX is a likely connection point in that journey (e.g. GIG-MIA-LAX-SFO) and if it's already in his itinerary then it should be easy to get AA to drop the last segment.
I read your post that way too.

Also, LAX is a possible connection point, but hardly a "likely connection point." More likely (or at least just as likely) are GIG-MIA-SFO, GIG-MIA-DFW-SFO, GIG-MIA-CLT-SFO, GIG-MIA-ORD-SFO, and GIG-MIA-PHX-SFO.

In any event, it appears that there are a lot of options to get the OP into SFO much earlier than 8pm. Perhaps if we learn his travel date we can identify some of them for him. Given the schedule changes it seems almost certain that AA will accommodate him and get him to SFO earlier. Not sure about letting him change to LAX. And if the OP would prefer to go to LAX, I don't think any of us need to know "why LAX is an acceptable substitute for SFO." It's sufficient for the purposes of our helping him to know if he'd still rather go into LAX even if AA can get him into SFO much earlier than 8pm.
